Her voice sounded sad and tired on the other line. I could hear the weariness.
We were talking about her difficulties in launching her business and how hard it was with a partner that didn’t really get what she was doing. She felt like he just “tolerated” her business.
Then she said it. Those words that bring tears to my eyes no matter how many times I listen to a client say them and no matter how many times I talk about it in workshops.
“I just feel so lonely. I don’t have anyone to share my successes with.”
There it was.
The loneliness of being an entrepreneur.
That painful, ugly feeling at the bottom of it all. Whether my clients are telling me about their frustrations about being asked when they’re going to get a “real job” or how much it stresses them out to tell their partners they need to spend money on their business when they aren’t making much yet, it really comes down to the same thing.

Not being understood.

Entrepreneurship is an act of courage.
And then after she’s committed to the journey, there’s the incredibly steep learning curve. Figuring out how to build a website. Creating things that her clients will want. FINDING her clients. Learning how to market herself to them without being pushy, even though most of it WILL ALWAYS feel pushy to her.
Saying her prices (which always sound too high to her) to someone OUT LOUD and crossing her fingers that they will sound reasonable.
